Worcester is still behind the rest of England on solar.
There are around 54 solar installations for every 1,000 homes in Worcester. Across England the figure is 65. Worcester has fewer solar roofs than the England average, and far fewer than the countryside around it. The city's big modern estates are among the easiest homes to fit, and most are still without panels.
10.5% of households in Worcester are in fuel poverty, against 9.9% across England. Every unit you make yourself is one you do not have to buy.

Will solar work on your Worcester roof?
The roofs around Worcester are not all equally good for solar. Here is the honest picture by property type, before anyone climbs a ladder.
Estates at Warndon Villages and St Peter's
Homes from the 1980s onwards with plain pitched roofs and good access. The most straightforward solar homes in the city.
Interwar semis in Battenhall and Claines
Good-sized roofs with at least one clear slope. Side and rear roofs often work well even when the front faces north.
Terraces in Barbourne and St John's
Georgian and Victorian terraces have narrower roofs, chimneys and rear extensions. A smaller system often still works, and we measure the usable area first.
Villages around the city
Kempsey, Powick, Hallow and Lower Broadheath have larger plots and longer roofs, with room for a battery in a garage or utility.
The historic centre and riverside
Much of central Worcester is a conservation area and there are many listed buildings near the Cathedral. We check what is allowed on your street before we quote.
Flats and converted buildings
In a block or a converted period building you do not own the roof, so panels need the freeholder and a shared scheme. We will tell you that up front.

The most valuable electricity your panels make is the electricity you don’t have to buy. Tap to see what a battery changes.
Most of your power is made in the middle of the day, when most people are at work. Without somewhere to store it, the spare goes to the grid, often for just a few pence.
Typical figures. Your own split depends on your system size, battery size and when you’re home. We model it for your house at the survey.
Honest figures, and the roofs we turn down.
You won’t find a big savings number on this page. Your saving depends on your bills, your roof and your habits, so we work it out for your house and give you the cautious figure in writing.
- North facing only, with no east, west or south roof to use.
- Heavily shaded by trees, chimneys or taller neighbours for most of the day.
- A roof that needs replacing soon. Re-roof first, then fit panels once.
- Structurally unsuitable, where the roof can’t safely take the load.
- Flats without freeholder consent. It is not your roof to fit on.

How much solar panels generate in Worcester
A typical 4kW solar panel system on a south-facing roof in Worcester generates around 4,000 kWh of electricity a year. For comparison, Ofgem puts a typical home’s electricity use at about 2,700 kWh a year.
That does not mean no bills. Most of that power is made in the daytime and in summer, so what you save depends on how much of it you use yourself. That is the part we work out for your house at the survey.
Source: European Commission PVGIS solar model for Worcester, rounded to the nearest 50 kWh. Assumes a 4kW system facing south at a 35 degree pitch, 14% system losses and no shading. East and west roofs generate less. Your own roof is modelled individually.

After that, VAT on solar and batteries is expected to rise to 5%. Surveys and installs take a few weeks, so the sooner we see your roof, the safer your 0% is.

Solar panels Worcester: your questions answered
Usually not. Roof-mounted solar panels on a house are normally permitted development, as long as they sit close to the roof and no higher than the ridge. Listed buildings need consent, and much of central Worcester around the Cathedral and the riverside is a conservation area where extra limits can apply. We check the rules for your street before we quote.
Often, yes, but with a smaller system. Terraced roofs are narrower and tend to have chimneys and rear extensions that cast shade, and many face east and west. East and west roofs still generate well across the day. We measure the usable roof at the survey and tell you plainly if it is not worth doing.
There is no general solar grant for homeowners. Solar and batteries carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027. The government's Warm Homes Loan Scheme offers subsidised loans for solar and batteries fitted by an MCS certified installer. The Warm Homes: Local Grant offers free upgrades to lower-income homes, and for Worcester it is run by Worcestershire County Council with Act on Energy. It is currently fully subscribed, with a waiting list.
Yes. A typical 4kW system on a south-facing roof in Worcester generates around 4,000 kWh a year, according to the European Commission PVGIS solar model. Panels generate from daylight, not just direct sunshine. Output is higher in summer and lower in winter, so we model your system across the whole year using your own roof direction, pitch and shading.
Not always. Panels alone usually let you use 30 to 40 percent of what they make, because most is generated while you are out. A battery typically takes that to 70 to 80 percent. We show you the arithmetic for your house so you can decide.
It depends on the size of your roof, how many panels fit, and whether you add a battery. As a guide, a typical 4kW system starts from £6,500, or from £9,500 with a battery. You get a fixed written price after a free roof survey, with scaffolding included and 0% VAT until 31 March 2027.
