Three things most people in Worcester do not know about air conditioning
See the planning rulesSince 29 May 2025, most houses no longer need planning permission for a system that heats and cools.
The same unit warms the room in winter, for far less than a plug-in or storage heater costs to run.
Most single-room systems are installed in one day, with very little mess.
Why Worcester Homes Get So Hot in Summer
Worcester sits in the Severn valley, a sheltered low-lying position that traps warm air on still summer days. Combined with the city's varied housing stock, from Georgian townhouses and Victorian terraces to modern new-build estates, the result is that indoor temperatures climb quickly and take a long time to drop overnight.
The Severn valley traps warm air
Worcester's position in the River Severn valley means warm air settles in the city on still summer days. The sheltered geography can make Worcester feel noticeably warmer than higher ground a few miles away, and indoor temperatures reflect this.
Georgian and Victorian properties store heat
The older period properties in Worcester's city centre, St John's and Henwick have solid stone or brick construction that absorbs heat through the day and releases it slowly overnight, keeping rooms warm long after the sun has gone down.
Modern estates seal heat inside
Newer developments across Warndon Villages, Ronkswood and Battenhall are built to high insulation standards. In summer that sealed construction traps solar heat inside with no passive escape route.
Conservatories become unusable
South-facing conservatories added to Worcester's semis and detached homes can exceed 40°C on sunny days, making them completely unusable from May through September without active cooling.
Bedrooms stay warm through the night
In Worcester's valley climate, walls and floors absorb heat through the day and release it after dark. Bedrooms regularly stay above 24°C well past midnight in summer, a temperature that makes quality sleep very difficult.
Home offices hit uncomfortable temperatures early
A spare bedroom or garden office in a Worcester property can reach 27°C by mid-morning on a warm day. Concentration and productivity drop sharply above 24°C, and a fan just moves the problem around.

Lower heating and cooling costs with modern systems
The bars below show how much electricity each option uses to do the same job. Shorter is cheaper to run.
Fitted air conditioning against a plug-in heater
About a third of the electricity for the same warmth
A plug-in heater, panel heater or storage heater turns one unit of electricity into one unit of heat. Fitted air conditioning moves heat instead of making it, so it gives around three to four units of heat for each unit of electricity.
Fitted air conditioning against a portable plug-in unit
Less than half of the electricity for the same cooling
A portable unit on wheels, with a hose out of the window, works hard for little result: it is less efficient, and the open window lets warm air back in. A fitted system is sealed, far quieter, and cools the room properly.
Typical figures, based on the energy label ratings of portable units and modern fitted inverter systems. Most fitted systems cost roughly 10p to 30p an hour to run, depending on the size of the room and your electricity tariff.
It matters here. 10.5% of households in the Worcester City Council area are in fuel poverty, against 9.9% across England. Source: DESNZ sub-regional fuel poverty data (2024).
When air conditioning is the wrong answer.
We would rather tell you now than sell you a system that disappoints. If one of these is you, we will say so.
- One unit for a whole house. A single wall unit cools the room it is in. More rooms need more units.
- A flat with no outside space for the outdoor unit, or a freeholder who will not allow one.
- A listed building without consent. It can be done, but permission comes first.
- Nowhere suitable for the outdoor unit that passes the noise check at your neighbour’s window.
Where our systems make the biggest difference
Restless, sweat-soaked nights
South-facing bedrooms and top-floor rooms hold heat long after sunset. A discreet wall unit brings the room down to a comfortable sleeping temperature and keeps it there quietly all night.
The hottest room in the house
Converted lofts sit directly under the roof and take the sun all day. A fitted system removes the heat at source, which a portable unit cannot manage.
Glass that overheats by 10am
Large glazed rooms turn into a greenhouse. Properly sized cooling makes the space usable all summer, and the same unit adds gentle warmth through winter.
Focus, productivity and video calls
It is hard to concentrate in a hot room. Steady, quiet cooling keeps you sharp through the working day, without fan noise on your calls.
Customer comfort, staff retention
Hot dining rooms and treatment rooms lose bookings and staff. Cassette and ducted systems keep customers comfortable through the busiest weeks.
Year-round climate control
Multi-zone systems give each area its own control: a warm reception, a cool server room and a comfortable shop floor, all from one efficient outdoor unit.

Planning permission for air conditioning in Worcester
Most people still assume air conditioning needs planning permission. For most houses it no longer does. The rules in England changed on 29 May 2025 for systems that heat as well as cool.
Much of central Worcester around the Cathedral and the riverside is a conservation area, where a unit on a wall facing the road generally needs permission. Listed buildings always need consent, and flats are treated differently. We check your address before we quote.
- No minimum distance from the boundary. The old one metre rule has gone.
- Larger units allowed, up to 1.5 cubic metres, and two on a detached house.
- It must heat as well as cool. Cooling-only systems are not covered, and the systems we fit do both.
- A noise check applies. The install must pass a calculation at your neighbour’s nearest window, and we do it before we fit.
Warm this winter, cool next summer. Worcester installs booking now.
The quiet months are the best time to fit. You get the heating benefit straight away, and you are not in the queue when the first hot week arrives.

Usually not, for a house. Since 29 May 2025, air conditioning that heats as well as cools counts as an air-to-air heat pump and is normally permitted development in England, with no minimum distance from the boundary. Yes. Modern systems are heat pumps, so the same unit heats in winter. It gives around three to four units of heat for every unit of electricity, which is why it costs far less to run than a plug-in heater or storage heater.
Most single-room installations in Worcester are completed in one day. Multi-room systems typically take 1–2 days.
