What it costs to keep warm in Worcester.
Worcester has a lot of period housing, and the question we hear most is whether a heat pump means new radiators everywhere. Usually it means a few, and we tell you exactly which before you commit.
In Worcester, 10.8% of homes have no mains gas connection and 10.5% of households are in fuel poverty. Across England the figures are 15.6% and 9.9%.
Sources: DESNZ households not connected to the gas network and sub-regional fuel poverty data (both 2024). Figures are for the Worcester City Council area.
Will a heat pump work in your Worcester home?
Homes around Worcester are not all equally suited to a heat pump. Here is the honest picture by property type, before anyone gives you a price.
Estates at Warndon Villages and St Peter's
Built from the 1980s onwards and well insulated. They need the smallest systems and the fewest radiator changes.
Interwar semis in Battenhall and Claines
Cavity walls, a side passage and room for a cylinder. Among the simplest homes in the city to convert.
Victorian and Georgian terraces in Barbourne and St John's
Solid walls and high ceilings need a carefully sized system and some larger radiators. They heat well when designed properly.
Villages around the city
Kempsey, Powick, Hallow and Lower Broadheath have more homes on oil or LPG, where the grant is £9,000 until 31 March 2027.
The historic centre and riverside
Much of central Worcester is a conservation area with many listed buildings. We check what is allowed on your street before we quote.
Flats and converted buildings
No outside space of your own and a freeholder to persuade. We will tell you at the start.
MCS certified heat pump installers in Worcester
Heat pumps go wrong when they are sized from a photo by someone who never returns. We are a West Midlands business with a unit in West Bromwich, the same team that already fits air conditioning across Worcestershire, and we measure your home before we price it.
- MCS certified, which is what lets us claim the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant for you.
- A room-by-room heat loss survey before any price, so the system is sized for your house.
- You know which radiators change, if any, before you commit.
- Our own engineers. Nobody is subcontracted, so the people who survey are the people who fit.
- We stay on call. If something needs looking at, you ring the people who fitted it.

When a heat pump is the wrong choice.
We would rather lose a job than fit a system that leaves you cold. If any of these apply to your home, we will tell you at the survey.
- Very poor insulation with no plan to improve it. We will tell you what to fix first, and it may be cheap.
- Nowhere sensible for the outdoor unit, or a spot too close to a neighbour’s window.
- No room for a hot water cylinder and no way to make some.
- A small flat on a cheap gas tariff, where the saving would be too small to be worth it.

Planning permission for heat pumps in Worcester
Most homes no longer need planning permission for an air source heat pump. The rules in England were relaxed on 29 May 2025, and many people still assume the old ones apply.
Much of central Worcester around the Cathedral and the riverside is a conservation area, where a unit on a wall or roof facing the road generally needs permission. Listed buildings always need consent. We check your address before we quote.
- No minimum distance from the boundary. The old one metre rule has gone.
- Units up to 1.5 cubic metres, up from 0.6, so modern quiet units are covered.
- Two units on a detached house, where one is not enough.
- A noise test still applies. The install must pass a calculation at your neighbour’s nearest window, and we do it before we quote.
