02Your home

Will a heat pump work in your Bromsgrove home?

Homes around Bromsgrove are not all equally suited to a heat pump. Here is the honest picture by property type, before anyone gives you a price.

Usually a good fit

Detached homes in Lickey, Blackwell and Barnt Green

Space outside for the unit and inside for a cylinder. Larger homes may suit two units, which the rules now allow on a detached house.

Usually a good fit

Estate homes in Catshill, Marlbrook and Charford

Houses from the 1960s onwards with cavity walls. Narrow pipework from the 1970s and 80s is the thing we check.

Good, with care

Victorian and Edwardian homes in Aston Fields

Solid walls and bay windows need a carefully sized system and a few larger radiators.

Usually a good fit

Village homes on oil or LPG

Belbroughton, Dodford, Hanbury and Stoke Prior have more homes off the gas grid, where the grant is £9,000 until 31 March 2027.

Good, with care

Whole-house upgrades

Already have, or planning, solar and an EV charger? A heat pump designed alongside them costs less to run.

03Who we are

MCS certified heat pump installers in Bromsgrove

Heat pumps go wrong when they are sized from a photo by someone who never returns. We are a West Midlands business with a unit in West Bromwich, the same team that already fits air conditioning across Worcestershire, and we measure your home before we price it.

  • MCS certified, which is what lets us claim the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant for you.
  • A room-by-room heat loss survey before any price, so the system is sized for your house.
  • You know which radiators change, if any, before you commit.
  • Our own engineers. Nobody is subcontracted, so the people who survey are the people who fit.
  • We stay on call. If something needs looking at, you ring the people who fitted it.

06Straight talking

When a heat pump is the wrong choice.

We would rather lose a job than fit a system that leaves you cold. If any of these apply to your home, we will tell you at the survey.

  • Very poor insulation with no plan to improve it. We will tell you what to fix first, and it may be cheap.
  • Nowhere sensible for the outdoor unit, or a spot too close to a neighbour’s window.
  • No room for a hot water cylinder and no way to make some.
  • A small flat on a cheap gas tariff, where the saving would be too small to be worth it.

09Planning

Planning permission for heat pumps in Bromsgrove

Most homes no longer need planning permission for an air source heat pump. The rules in England were relaxed on 29 May 2025, and many people still assume the old ones apply.

Parts of Bromsgrove town centre and several surrounding villages are conservation areas, where a unit on a wall or roof facing the road generally needs permission. Listed buildings always need consent. We check your address before we quote.

  • No minimum distance from the boundary. The old one metre rule has gone.
  • Units up to 1.5 cubic metres, up from 0.6, so modern quiet units are covered.
  • Two units on a detached house, where one is not enough.
  • A noise test still applies. The install must pass a calculation at your neighbour’s nearest window, and we do it before we quote.

11Straight answers

Air source heat pumps Bromsgrove: your questions answered

Usually not. Since 29 May 2025 an air source heat pump on a house in England is normally permitted development: there is no minimum distance from the boundary, the unit can be up to 1.5 cubic metres, and a detached house can have two. It must pass a noise calculation at your neighbour's nearest window. Listed buildings always need consent, and in conservation areas a unit on a wall or roof facing the road generally needs permission. Parts of Bromsgrove town centre and several surrounding villages are conservation areas. We check the rules for your address before we quote.

Partly, yes. Solar will not cover all your winter heating, because that is when panels make least, but it cuts the yearly cost noticeably, and a battery helps further. With Bromsgrove's high electric car ownership, we often design heat pump, solar, battery and charger as one system from a single survey.

Yes. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme gives £7,500 off an air source heat pump, or £9,000 for homes with no mains gas that heat with oil or LPG until 31 March 2027. We apply for it and it comes straight off your price. The work also carries 0% VAT until 31 March 2027. Separately, the council-run Warm Homes: Local Grant offers free upgrades to lower-income homes, and for Bromsgrove it is run through Bromsgrove District Council as part of a Midlands consortium, so check with the council for current availability.

As a guide, a system for a typical 3-bed semi is around £12,400 fitted, which is about £4,900 after the £7,500 grant. Larger or older homes cost more, and well insulated ones can cost less. Your price is fixed in writing after a free heat loss survey, with the grant already taken off.

Sometimes, a few. Heat pumps run at lower water temperatures, so some rooms may need a larger radiator. Your survey report tells you exactly which radiators change, if any, before you commit.

Most installs take around three days. You have heating and hot water for most of that time, and we tell you what happens on each day before we start.

All Bromsgrove postcodes (B60 and B61), including Aston Fields, Charford, Catshill, Marlbrook, Lickey, Blackwell, Finstall, Rock Hill, Lowes Hill, Barnt Green, Belbroughton, Dodford, Bournheath, Stoke Prior and Hanbury.
