Will a heat pump work in your Wolverhampton home?

Homes around Wolverhampton are not all equally suited to a heat pump. Here is the honest picture by property type, before anyone gives you a price.

Usually a good fit

Semis in Wednesfield, Bushbury and Oxley

Interwar and post-war homes with cavity walls and a side passage. Straightforward to convert.

Usually a good fit

Detached homes in Tettenhall, Wightwick and Penn

Room outside for the unit and inside for a cylinder. Older, larger houses need careful radiator sizing.

Usually a good fit

Homes in Perton, Codsall and Wombourne

Modern and post-war houses just over the boundary in South Staffordshire. Usually well insulated and simple to fit.

Depends on the house

Victorian terraces near the centre

The house will heat. The questions are where the outdoor unit goes and where a cylinder fits. We check both first.

Depends on the house

Homes on storage heaters

Often the biggest saving of all, but they need radiators and pipework fitting from scratch. We price that in honestly.

Usually not

Flats and tower blocks

No outside space of your own and a freeholder or council to persuade. Air conditioning that heats can be the better route.

03Who we are

MCS certified heat pump installers in Wolverhampton

Heat pumps go wrong when they are sized from a photo by someone who never returns. We are a West Midlands business with a unit in West Bromwich, the same team that already fits air conditioning across the West Midlands, and we measure your home before we price it.

  • MCS certified, which is what lets us claim the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant for you.
  • A room-by-room heat loss survey before any price, so the system is sized for your house.
  • You know which radiators change, if any, before you commit.
  • Our own engineers. Nobody is subcontracted, so the people who survey are the people who fit.
  • We stay on call. If something needs looking at, you ring the people who fitted it.

When a heat pump is the wrong choice.

We would rather lose a job than fit a system that leaves you cold. If any of these apply to your home, we will tell you at the survey.

  • Very poor insulation with no plan to improve it. We will tell you what to fix first, and it may be cheap.
  • Nowhere sensible for the outdoor unit, or a spot too close to a neighbour’s window.
  • No room for a hot water cylinder and no way to make some.
  • A small flat on a cheap gas tariff, where the saving would be too small to be worth it.

09Planning

Planning permission for heat pumps in Wolverhampton

Most homes no longer need planning permission for an air source heat pump. The rules in England were relaxed on 29 May 2025, and many people still assume the old ones apply.

Tettenhall, Wightwick and parts of Penn include conservation areas, where a unit on a wall or roof facing the road generally needs permission. Listed buildings always need consent. We check your address before we quote.

  • No minimum distance from the boundary. The old one metre rule has gone.
  • Units up to 1.5 cubic metres, up from 0.6, so modern quiet units are covered.
  • Two units on a detached house, where one is not enough.
  • A noise test still applies. The install must pass a calculation at your neighbour’s nearest window, and we do it before we quote.
Boiler Upgrade Scheme

The £7,500 grant runs to 31 December 2027. Homes on oil or LPG with no mains gas get £9,000, but only until 31 March 2027.

11Straight answers

Air source heat pumps Wolverhampton: your questions answered

Usually not. Since 29 May 2025 an air source heat pump on a house in England is normally permitted development: there is no minimum distance from the boundary, the unit can be up to 1.5 cubic metres, and a detached house can have two. It must pass a noise calculation at your neighbour's nearest window. Listed buildings always need consent, and in conservation areas a unit on a wall or roof facing the road generally needs permission. Tettenhall, Wightwick and parts of Penn include conservation areas. We check the rules for your address before we quote.

Yes, if you have outside space for the unit. Replacing storage heaters qualifies for the £7,500 grant, and running costs usually fall sharply. The job is bigger than swapping a boiler, because radiators and pipework go in from new, and our quote includes all of it. In a flat with no outside space, air conditioning that heats may suit better.

Yes. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme gives £7,500 off an air source heat pump, or £9,000 for homes with no mains gas that heat with oil or LPG until 31 March 2027. We apply for it and it comes straight off your price. The work also carries 0% VAT until 31 March 2027. Separately, the council-run Warm Homes: Local Grant offers free upgrades to lower-income homes, and for Wolverhampton it is funded through the West Midlands Combined Authority and run by City of Wolverhampton Council. Eligibility depends on your income and where you live.

As a guide, a system for a typical 3-bed semi is around £12,400 fitted, which is about £4,900 after the £7,500 grant. Larger or older homes cost more, and well insulated ones can cost less. Your price is fixed in writing after a free heat loss survey, with the grant already taken off.

Sometimes, a few. Heat pumps run at lower water temperatures, so some rooms may need a larger radiator. Your survey report tells you exactly which radiators change, if any, before you commit.

Most installs take around three days. You have heating and hot water for most of that time, and we tell you what happens on each day before we start.

All Wolverhampton postcodes (WV1 to WV11 and WV14), including Tettenhall, Wightwick, Penn, Merry Hill, Blakenhall, Graiseley, Bushbury, Oxley, Fallings Park, Wednesfield, Heath Town, Bilston, Codsall, Perton, Wombourne and Lower Penn.
