01Solar in Birmingham

Birmingham has about half the solar of the rest of England.

There are around 35 solar installations for every 1,000 homes in Birmingham. Across England the figure is 65. Most of the city’s suitable roofs are still empty, while the bills underneath them keep going up.

It bites harder here than most places. 13.8% of Birmingham households are in fuel poverty, against 9.9% across England. That is roughly 1 home in 7.

02Your roof

Will solar work on your Birmingham roof?

Birmingham has every kind of house, and they are not equally good for solar. Here is the honest picture by property type, before anyone climbs a ladder.

Usually a good fit

1930s semis in Hall Green and Erdington

The interwar semis across Hall Green, Acocks Green, Erdington and Kingstanding have generous roofs with at least one clear slope. They are the most straightforward solar homes in the city.

Usually a good fit

Detached and estate homes

Post-war and modern houses in Northfield, Kings Norton, Longbridge, Quinton and Sheldon tend to have simple, unshaded roofs and easy scaffold access. Quick to survey, quick to fit.

Good, with care

Edwardian villas in Edgbaston and Harborne

Big roofs with room for a larger system and a battery. Dormers, chimneys and mature trees need working around, and many streets sit in conservation areas, so we check planning first.

Depends on the roof

Victorian terraces in Moseley and Kings Heath

Narrower roofs, chimney shade and rear extensions mean a smaller system. Many face east and west, which still generates well across the day. We measure the usable area and tell you if it stacks up.

Check first

Bournville and conservation areas

Bournville, Moseley, Edgbaston and the Jewellery Quarter include conservation areas, and listed buildings always need consent. We check what is allowed on your street before we quote.

Usually not

City centre and Jewellery Quarter flats

In a block you do not own the roof, so panels need the freeholder and a shared scheme. If that is you, we will say so straight away rather than book a survey that goes nowhere.

Not sure which of these your home is? We’ll check your roof for free.

  • Written workmanship guarantee for 5 years, on top of the manufacturer warranties.
  • Scaffolding included in your fixed price, including on tight terraced streets.

05Why a battery matters

Your panels work hardest while you’re out.

The most valuable electricity your panels make is the electricity you don’t have to buy. Tap to see what a battery changes.

30 to 40%of the power your panels make gets used in your home

Most of your power is made in the middle of the day, when most people are at work. Without somewhere to store it, the spare goes to the grid, often for just a few pence.

Typical figures. Your own split depends on your system size, battery size and when you’re home. We model it for your house at the survey.

06Straight talking

Honest figures, and the roofs we turn down.

You won’t find a big savings number on this page. Your saving depends on your bills, your roof and your habits, so we work it out for your house and give you the cautious figure in writing.

6–9 yrs Typical payback. We quote the long end, because a promise you beat is better than one you miss.
  • North facing only, with no east, west or south roof to use.
  • Heavily shaded by trees, chimneys or taller neighbours for most of the day.
  • A roof that needs replacing soon. Re-roof first, then fit panels once.
  • Structurally unsuitable, where the roof can’t safely take the load.
  • Flats without freeholder consent. It is not your roof to fit on.

How much solar panels generate in Birmingham

A typical 4kW solar panel system on a south-facing roof in Birmingham generates around 3,850 kWh of electricity a year. For comparison, Ofgem puts a typical home’s electricity use at about 2,700 kWh a year.

That does not mean no bills. Most of that power is made in the daytime and in summer, so what you save depends on how much of it you use yourself. That is the part we work out for your house at the survey.

Source: European Commission PVGIS solar model for Birmingham, rounded to the nearest 50 kWh. Assumes a 4kW system facing south at a 35 degree pitch, 14% system losses and no shading. East and west roofs generate less. Your own roof is modelled individually.

0% VAT deadline

0% VAT ends 31 March 2027. Birmingham surveys booking now.

After that, VAT on solar and batteries is expected to rise to 5%. Surveys and installs take a few weeks, so the sooner we see your roof, the safer your 0% is.

12Straight answers

Solar panels Birmingham: your questions answered

Usually not. Roof-mounted solar panels on a house are normally permitted development, as long as they sit close to the roof and no higher than the ridge. Listed buildings need consent, and parts of Birmingham such as Bournville, Moseley, Edgbaston and the Jewellery Quarter are conservation areas where extra limits can apply. We check the rules for your street before we quote.

Often, yes, but with a smaller system. Terraced roofs are narrower and tend to have chimneys and rear extensions that cast shade, and many face east and west rather than south. East and west roofs still generate well across the day. We measure the usable roof at the survey and tell you plainly if it is not worth doing.

In most cases, no. In a block of flats you do not own the roof, so panels need the freeholder's agreement and a shared scheme for the building. We would rather tell you that now than take a survey booking we cannot follow through on.

There is no general solar grant for homeowners. Solar and batteries carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027. The government's Warm Homes Loan Scheme offers subsidised loans for solar and batteries fitted by an MCS certified installer. The council-run Warm Homes: Local Grant offers free upgrades to lower-income homes, and in Birmingham it is limited to Balsall Heath, Bromford, Castle Vale, Sparkbrook, Sparkhill, and Tyseley and Hay Mills.

Yes. A typical 4kW system on a south-facing roof in Birmingham generates around 3,850 kWh a year, according to the European Commission PVGIS solar model. Panels generate from daylight, not just direct sunshine. Output is higher in summer and lower in winter, so we model your system across the whole year using your own roof direction, pitch and shading.

Not always. Panels alone usually let you use 30 to 40 percent of what they make, because most is generated while you are out. A battery typically takes that to 70 to 80 percent. We show you the arithmetic for your house so you can decide.

It depends on the size of your roof, how many panels fit, and whether you add a battery. You get a fixed written price after a free roof survey, with scaffolding included and 0% VAT until 31 March 2027. The price does not change afterwards.
