What it costs to keep warm in Cannock Chase.
Cannock mixes ex-mining terraces with a lot of recent new-build. The new homes are the easiest we see to convert, and the older homes still on storage heaters have the most to gain.
In Cannock Chase, 5.3% of homes have no mains gas connection and 10.4% of households are in fuel poverty. Across England the figures are 15.6% and 9.9%.
Sources: DESNZ households not connected to the gas network and sub-regional fuel poverty data (both 2024). Figures are for the Cannock Chase Council area.
Will a heat pump work in your Cannock home?
Homes around Cannock are not all equally suited to a heat pump. Here is the honest picture by property type, before anyone gives you a price.
New-build estates
Modern homes in Heath Hayes, Norton Canes and Hednesford are insulated well enough to need a small system and few changes.
Post-war semis and detached homes
Pye Green, Huntington and Great Wyrley. Cavity walls and room for the unit and a cylinder.
Ex-mining terraces in Hednesford and Chadsmoor
The house will heat. The questions are where the outdoor unit goes and where a cylinder fits.
Homes on storage heaters
Often the biggest saving of all, but radiators and pipework go in from new. We price that honestly.
Bungalows
Compact, easy to pipe and usually with a garden for the unit.
Homes on the edge of Cannock Chase
The Chase is a protected National Landscape, where a unit on a wall facing the road generally needs permission. We check first.
MCS certified heat pump installers in Cannock
Heat pumps go wrong when they are sized from a photo by someone who never returns. We are a West Midlands business with a unit in West Bromwich, the same team that already fits air conditioning across Staffordshire, and we measure your home before we price it.
- MCS certified, which is what lets us claim the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant for you.
- A room-by-room heat loss survey before any price, so the system is sized for your house.
- You know which radiators change, if any, before you commit.
- Our own engineers. Nobody is subcontracted, so the people who survey are the people who fit.
- We stay on call. If something needs looking at, you ring the people who fitted it.

When a heat pump is the wrong choice.
We would rather lose a job than fit a system that leaves you cold. If any of these apply to your home, we will tell you at the survey.
- Very poor insulation with no plan to improve it. We will tell you what to fix first, and it may be cheap.
- Nowhere sensible for the outdoor unit, or a spot too close to a neighbour’s window.
- No room for a hot water cylinder and no way to make some.
- A small flat on a cheap gas tariff, where the saving would be too small to be worth it.

Planning permission for heat pumps in Cannock
Most homes no longer need planning permission for an air source heat pump. The rules in England were relaxed on 29 May 2025, and many people still assume the old ones apply.
Cannock Chase is a protected National Landscape, where a unit on a wall or roof facing the road generally needs permission. Listed buildings always need consent. We check your address before we quote.
- No minimum distance from the boundary. The old one metre rule has gone.
- Units up to 1.5 cubic metres, up from 0.6, so modern quiet units are covered.
- Two units on a detached house, where one is not enough.
- A noise test still applies. The install must pass a calculation at your neighbour’s nearest window, and we do it before we quote.
£7,500 off, claimed for you. Cannock surveys booking now.
The £7,500 grant runs to 31 December 2027. Homes on oil or LPG with no mains gas get £9,000, but only until 31 March 2027.

Air source heat pumps Cannock: your questions answered
Usually not. Since 29 May 2025 an air source heat pump on a house in England is normally permitted development: there is no minimum distance from the boundary, the unit can be up to 1.5 cubic metres, and a detached house can have two. It must pass a noise calculation at your neighbour's nearest window. Listed buildings always need consent, and in conservation areas a unit on a wall or roof facing the road generally needs permission. Cannock Chase is a protected National Landscape. We check the rules for your address before we quote.
Modern units are quiet, and there is now a formal test. Every install has to pass a noise calculation at your neighbour's nearest window, known as MCS 020. We do that calculation before we quote and choose the position to suit, so on a close-built estate in Heath Hayes or Norton Canes you know it complies before anything is fitted.
Yes. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme gives £7,500 off an air source heat pump, or £9,000 for homes with no mains gas that heat with oil or LPG until 31 March 2027. We apply for it and it comes straight off your price. The work also carries 0% VAT until 31 March 2027. Separately, the council-run Warm Homes: Local Grant offers free upgrades to lower-income homes, and for Cannock it is run as Staffordshire Warmer Homes, which has been open since 24 November 2025 for homes on or off the gas grid.
As a guide, a system for a typical 3-bed semi is around £12,400 fitted, which is about £4,900 after the £7,500 grant. Larger or older homes cost more, and well insulated ones can cost less. Your price is fixed in writing after a free heat loss survey, with the grant already taken off.
Sometimes, a few. Heat pumps run at lower water temperatures, so some rooms may need a larger radiator. Your survey report tells you exactly which radiators change, if any, before you commit.
Most installs take around three days. You have heating and hot water for most of that time, and we tell you what happens on each day before we start.
